Trouble In Neptune: Chad Hugo Vs. Pharrell Williams

The Neptunes & N.E.R.D: Legendary Partnership Faces Public Fallout

Hip-Hop fans around the world are disappointed to hear that Neptunes partners, Pharrell
Williams and Chad Hugo, are no longer on speaking terms. This all stemming from a recent
lawsuit filed by Chad Hugo against his once his business partner, Pharrell Williams. Filed on
January 23, 2026, Hugo is stating that Pharrell withheld music ventures from N.E.R.D and The
Neptunes. Together as The Neptunes, the duo played a major role in shaping early 2000s hip-hop
and pop, producing genre-defining hits for artists like Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, and Britney
Spears. Their signature futuristic sound and minimalist beats influenced an entire generation of
producers and helped bridge hip-hop alongside mainstream pop music.

From Virginia Beach to N.E.R.D, The Neptunes’ Rise

The two musical innovators met in Virginia Beach during the 80’s and founded The
Neptunes in 1992 after being discovered by producer, Teddy Riley, at a local talent show. The
beginning of their friendship began in their high school band and ultimately transitioned to
producing beats at Hugo’s home, under the name The Neptunes. Their first big break came in
1992 when Williams wrote a verse on the hit Rump Shaker by Wreckx-N-Effects. This would be
the beginning of their success and a door opening followed by a line of hits from Hugo and
Williams.

The Neptunes, N.E.R.D, and a Growing Legal Battle Over Legacy and Royalties

Though they both embarked on an abundance of success, such as being inducted into
Songwriters Hall of Fame Class of 2020, legal troubles and disputes began to arise. In 2024,
Hugo filed a lawsuit against Williams stating that he “acted in bad faith” when Williams filed for
The Neptunes name to be trademarked without him. This continued when Hugo filed another
lawsuit on January 23rd, 2026, stating that Williams kept his royalties that were due to him.
According to Hugo and the lawsuit, he is owed between $325,000 and $1 Million in royalties
from their project “No One Ever Really Dies” that was released in 2017.

Pharrell Responds as The Neptunes & N.E.R.D Legacy Hangs in the Balance

Pharrell Williams has responded to these claims and lawsuits by Hugo. His rep shared on
behalf of Williams “a standard accounting review is already in progress. If the accounting review
determines that money is owed, the appropriate party will pay it.” Williams has also emphasized
that he always has acted in good faith, has a great respect for Hugo, he looks forward to
resolving this manner in a form that will honor their history, brand, and legacy they built
together.
