The GRAMMYs remain one of the most respected honors in music — but most fans don’t realize how the nominations and awards are actually decided.

With First Round Voting now open until October 15, Patchwerk Radio is breaking down how the process works, who gets to vote, and what this means for artists, producers, and studios making noise right now.

Step 1: Eligibility & Entry Submission

Before anyone gets nominated, the work has to qualify. Every GRAMMY cycle has a defined eligibility period — for the upcoming 68th Annual GRAMMY Awards, that window runs from August 31, 2024, to August 30, 2025.

Labels, artists, producers, and engineers submit their releases through the Academy’s official portal, where they’re screened for proper credits, dates, and category placement.
Once approved, they move into the voting stages.

Step 2: First Round Voting — Happening Now

This is where the GRAMMY story really begins. During First Round Voting (October 3–15, 2025), Recording Academy members log in to their dashboards and cast ballots in their areas of expertise — as well as in the “General Field” categories like Album, Record, and Song of the Year.

These ballots determine who becomes a nominee. In past years, secret committees reviewed some categories, but that system has largely been phased out.
Today, it’s more of a direct reflection of member votes — meaning your peers have the power to shape the nominee list.

“First Round voting is where the real GRAMMY influence happens. This is the moment where peers choose which records even get heard on the main stage.”

Step 3: Nominees Announced in November

After ballots close, the votes are counted and the nominees are revealed publicly, usually in early November.
These nominees then move forward to the final ballot, where the race truly begins.

Step 4: Final Round Voting

When the finalists are set, a second round of voting begins in December. Members choose from the official nominees, and those results are verified by an independent accounting firm — keeping results confidential until GRAMMY night.
Winners are then revealed live on stage, often changing careers overnight.

Step 5: Who Gets to Vote?

The GRAMMYs are decided by Voting Members of the Recording Academy — creative professionals like artists, producers, engineers, songwriters, and musicians who have verified credits on commercial releases.
These members are expected to vote only in categories they’re qualified to judge, helping preserve integrity in the process.

Solicitation, campaigning, or exchanging votes is strictly prohibited — the Academy enforces rules to ensure the focus stays on artistic quality and peer respect, not politics.

Why This October Window Is So Important

  • It’s the gateway to nominations. If your project was submitted, this voting period decides whether it makes it onto the official list.
  • Visibility matters. Marketing and awareness within the Academy’s community can help ensure your work is recognized — within ethical guidelines.
  • Studios like Patchwerk play a major role. With hundreds of gold, platinum, and diamond records, the work created here has shaped the sound of GRAMMY history for decades. Supporting our clients through this window means everything.
  • Respect earns results. The GRAMMYs are peer-voted, meaning reputation, quality, and authenticity often outweigh hype.
